Sleep Disturbance Information

Many situations can cause disturbances in your sleep patterns, and often, simple lifestyle changes can dramatically help to improve your sleep quality. But while most people experience occasional periods of sleep disturbance, many others suffer from disorders such as chronic Insomnia, Restless Legs Syndrome, Excessive Daytime Sleepiness, and Sleep Apnea. In these cases, your doctor may recommend that you see a specialist in order to diagnose and treat your disorder.

Stanley Liu, MD, DDS, FACS, Sleep Surgeon

I share a Stanford lineage with Dr. Jerald Simmons and have always relished hearing about the innovations he has brought to the Stanford sleep lab since its earliest days in the 1990's. Today, Comprehensive Sleep Medicine Associates sleep labs founded by Dr. Simmons’ remains the only one I know where esophageal pressure monitoring is performed both efficiently and expertly. For younger patients, pediatric patients, and women with the often-elusive diagnosis of upper airway resistance syndrome (UARS), there is truly no better lab in the world. I have personally flown to Dr. Simmons' CSMA's lab in Texas to observe and learn when a few of my patients I referred were tested. Beyond maintaining the highest standards in in-lab polysomnography, Dr. Simmons continues to innovate — most recently with continuous monitoring systems for at-risk populations with sleep-disordered breathing. I am proud to call him both a mentor and a colleague.

I had a fantastic experience with Comprehensive Sleep Medicine Associates. From the moment I first met with them, the staff was kind, professional, and incredibly knowledgeable. The entire team made me feel comfortable and listened to every concern I had about my sleep issues. The diagnostic process was smooth and thorough, and I truly appreciated how clearly everything was explained to me. My provider took the time to ensure I understood my treatment options and helped craft a plan that was best for me. I highly recommend Comprehensive Sleep Medicine Associates to anyone struggling with sleep problems. Their expertise and genuine care make all the difference.

Professional Information

Most people have a primary care physician, especially with current healthcare plans. Unfortunately, most of these physicians have not received any training on identifying or treating sleep problems. If the physician were to add just a few screening questions related to sleep to their routine screening assessment, millions of Americans would be guided into a systematic pathway which could improve their sleep ills.

Clinical Approach to Sleep Compaints

Breathing through a narrow airway causes a vacuum that pulls on the throat’s soft tissue causing it to vibrate, which creates the snoring sound.

REM Behavior Disorders Research

REM sleep behavior disorder (RBD) is a sleep disorder in which a patient will physically act out their dreams unknowingly while asleep.

Diagnostic Sleep Testing

Snoring and sleep apnea are extremely common, and patients with these conditions require proper evaluation through diagnostic sleep testing.

Nocturnal Bruxism
